Australian GP : Alonso & Massa quotes

* Fernando Alonso 4th:
"If you just look at the standings, it's not a bad result. Yes, we lost contact with Vettel and Hamilton, although we did better than Webber and Button. Here in the Albert Park, it seems that I am subscribed to fourth place, is the third time in four years that I finished the race in that position. Last year we came here in the wake of our victory in Bahrain which means that the same result was thus a very different feeling.
Once again today, Sebastian seemed to be on another planet, while others were a little closer, not as much as Friday, but at least not as far from each other in qualifying yesterday. Finish behind Petrov again as in Abu Dhabi? That's right, but it is a coincidence and then, at this stage it is more satisfying to have managed to keep me behind Webber, who will be a more serious opponent in the battle for the title of Russia.
The KERS worked well as the adjustable rear wing, although he did not make overtaking easier. At first there was some confusion: I made a good start , but then Button beat me and I had to swerve to avoid a collision. The strategy was good and it helped me gain a few seats. Maybe if I had not solved immediately in traffic, I tried make two stops but given the way things happened, we made the best decision. We are in the right place to win a title, but we certainly do not win it if we continue to finish third or fourth. We must improve, we know, but it is too early to make any predictions."
*Felipe Massa 7th:
"At first, things started off right with a good start and a good defense against attacks from Button. Then we tried to save using hard tires, but it has not paid and we had to make three stops in the end, which cost me some places. In the second part, I have suffered the degradation of the rear tires and I could not keep apace. The new elements, such as the rear wing, worked well as they should have been: we've certainly seen more overtaking than last year."

Alonso & Massa Saturday declarations

*Fernando Alonso, 5th: "Obviously, we can not be happy with this result, but we can obviously not make a play right away. We certainly have not taken full advantage of the car and we understand why when you compare what we saw during testing. We ended up here a lot closer to cars that were far away in Spain. Everything went well yesterday and we had a good feeling with the car, while from This morning, the situation has changed, of course it got worse.
Now we'll see what the race unfolds. During the winter testing and during the free practice yesterday, our performance over a long run was good and we were certainly closer to those who seem far today. The fifth on the grid is not too bad and that means I am able to fight for a podium in a race that will be completely open.Just think of what happened last year, with Kubica who started from the sixth or seventh place and finished second. McLaren seems to have made a good step forward, but do not forget Mercedes, who has been impressive in recent Barcelona test."
*Felipe Massa 8th:
"We were less competitive than what we expected, and there's no doubt. Of course, I do not think I was in the fight for pole, especially when you look at the turn faster than [Sebastian] Vettel did, but hoped to be further up the grid. We had problems with both the hard and soft tires, which we had no winter testing. They offer less grip in the first round, or at least they do with our car. Now we must prepare as well as possible for tomorrow's race, where pure speed is not the only thing that matters, work reliability and the team is most important. My head-to-tail Q3? When I left the pit lane, I accelerated and the tires were obviously still too cold. The train was not damaged tires for the race, but it certainly was not a help my lap."

Alonso & Massa Friday declarations

Fernando Alonso :
"Nothing new, nothing to say. These two free practice sessions did not really reveal the real levels of competitive teams. Red Bull this morning was the fastest team, this afternoon it was McLaren with Mercedes and who was present, while Williams and Renault seem fast enough. There are still many teams that could have a fighting chance for victory, so obviously it will be necessary to make good on Saturday, without error if one wants to go in the first lines. Today we focused mainly on analyzing the behavior of Pirelli tires, which seems slightly different here than in private testing, partly because the track surface here is different. Regarding the strategy, we will need to be very flexible in the race, because at the moment, we do not have enough information on the tires. I am happy with the car At the beginning there was understeer, and we are still far from a sure grip on the front, but it went better than my expectations. We wanted to show we have special thoughts for Japan, the whole team is with them, so we stuck a sticker dedicated to the people of a country that has brought a lot to F1."
Felipe Massa :
"We tested a lot in these two test sessions, we shared the work with Alonso to explore different ways to prepare the rest of the weekend. I expected to make a time a little faster, especially since soft tires are at best only from their fourth rounds. But I really could not improve because there were a few drops of rain to complicate situation. From what we saw , soft tires showed less deterioration than expected, but we must work to see if this will always happen in the race. This track is much easier on the tires like Barcelona for example, we have made so many tests on it. This year it will be essential to study carefully their behavior, circuit by circuit. The difference in performance between the pure and simple e two tires are marked. McLaren and Red Bull seem very strong, but there are other teams who may be on the pace ."

Alonso opened his sports complex in Oviedo !

Fernando Alonso opened the karting track that will be present in his sports complex, located in Margal in the suburb of Oviedo , which will open to the public next June. This track is 1.4 km longer and Fernando hasmade a few laps in front of 4,000 spectators who came to see him ! The complex also includes a space dedicated to the safety on the road and a museum tracing the career of Fernando.
Here are some words from the double world champion: "I want to thank the authorities of Asturias for making this possible. I only test the surface, it was not until June for the official opening."
The Ferrari driver was happy to see that the track was based in part on the Suzuka Circuit and Valencia one :
"This go-kart track could become the best in the world."
"When the doors open to the public, there will also conduct lessons of sports courses and we hope to involve all schools in Asturias because the safety on the road is as important as education. As for the museum it will contain the cars and memorabilia associated with the best moments of my career."

Pirelli's rainbow !

Pirelli confirmed the selected color code to identify the tires in the upcoming races. Note that for the first 3 races used tires will be the hard and soft ones . On the mounting above you can see the tires and the different colors associated with them.

The news of the week

* Sebastian Vettel contract has been extended until 2014 by Red Bull.
* Jean Todt said supporting the Australian Grand Prix to keep it scheduled on the calendar . He also hoped that in future the pilots, as NASCAR and Moto GP, have a number that will follow them throughout their career and not by changing the classification of their team in the constructors' championship . This number should be inscribed in large letters on their car and allow viewers to better identify the drivers.
* Bahrain declared a state of emergency for three months which is beyond the time originally planned by the FIA so that the country will decide whether or not a GP of Bahrain will take place . The FIA reported that it does not lengthen the transmission seasons period which suggests that the GP could not occur at all.

The winter testing has been completed and Fernando Alonso is heading to the first GP of the season in Melbourne Australia. Here's what he said after the last day:
"We had a good winter last season and we got in a good position, similar to Red Bull and other teams. We were there in the fight . This year I am very happy this winter, and I am as confident as last year. We're very close to Red Bull and other teams. It's up to us to be better than them in Melbourne, Malaysia and China. It will be played on small details, because I think that the performance of today's cars are very close. There is not one that is completely ahead of everybody, we just have to make our best.
The favorites? I think it will always be four teams: McLaren Mercedes, Red Bull Racing and Ferrari. Maybe there will also Renault and Williams . This year, they had a good winter. So it's very open to Australia. Hopefully we'll be able to fight for the podium and victory. In three or four races we'll have a somewhat clearer picture of the situation and hopefully we'll be there."

The FIA world council decisions

On March 8 the FIA world council met and here are their decisions
- the Bahrain GP organizers have until May 1 to decide whether the GP will take place or not.
- Pirelli has the right to test new components during the Friday practices of the GPs ,and teams will be notified two weeks in advance and each driver will have 2 sets of new tires for testing.
- Regulation on the Safety Car was somewhat revised: now the drivers will join the SC with a speed reduced by 40% compared to the fastest lap on the track before the entry of the SC and the pit lane will always be open except if the SC needs to borrow the pit lane.
- FIA also announced the creation of a group called "circuit design" who will check if the circuits, old and new, have capacities for many overruns. And if this is not the case some circuits may have to change their track if necessary.

After this day of testing Fernando Alonso held to support the families of victims of the tsunami that occurred in Japan: "
Apart from the problems we encounter in F1, such as difficulty coping in F1, the complexity of materials , we realize that there are more important things, such as natural disasters, and my thoughts are for the victims and families residents in Japan."
Then he went back on the agenda of the day:
"To know where we are located opposite the other, we should expect next March 26 in Melbourne in qualifying and racing. But we have no doubt the 150 ° Italia will be very competitive.
The car has once again proved its true potential. We're very happy. We've made some changes, which were really helpful during our race simulations, during which the lap times were quite reasonable."
Where are we compared to the others? As already stated, we will know in Melbourne, and not before. The use of tires, fuel costs, the program of the day [...] here is something completely distorting a piece of time. From the beginning of these tests, we have always focused on our own work, trying to improve the car and stay calm. In 15 days we will see the fruits of our efforts this offseason."

Fernando Alonso celebrates 10 years in Formula 1 !

Fernando Alonso last week celebrated its 10 year presence in Formula 1. On this occasion he answered some questions from Spanish newspaper Marca in which he stated to be very happy to have signed with Ferrari:
"I expected a team of legend and magic, and it was a pleasant surprise, even better than what I was waiting for . I'm in no hurry to leave. Here, I take pleasure in finishing second or even eighth or twenty-third,"
he is also back on the worst cars and also the best that had to drive during his career:
"The Renault in 2009 was the worst car i had to drive but managed to get a podium in Singapore. The cars of 2004 and 2005 were the most enjoyable. There was the war between Bridgestone and Michelin tires that allowed us to be a few seconds faster with 900 horses. Even with less aerodynamic than we had six years ago from today, we turned in 1:08 at Valencia, 1:14 cons now six seconds of difference. These cars are hard to beat."
Fernando has also revealed he almost signed with Prost GP early in his career:
"In addition to go with Minardi [in 2001], I also had an offer to go to Prost Then, maybe become a pilot essays Ferrari, or maybe not and I should return in F3000. There was no guarantee then that Renault gave me a better opportunity."
Finally when he was asked whether he planned to lead a team when deciding Formula 1, Fernando said: "Today I would say no, because what I want is to drive. But it will be difficult to leave F1 one day because I drove my entire life. I think I'd rather spend my weekends having fun in rather than a kart to another job"
Fernando also said he would rather help young drivers to integrate f1. But don't worry it's not for now !

* After having suggested that the Bahrain GP could be held in August (an idea finally abandoned because of the heat too high at this time), Bernie Ecclestone thinks it could take place in November after the Brazilian GP if calm returns by then to Bahrain. A decision will be taken at the next World Council on March 8.
* Bernie Ecclestone, once again, thinks to spice up the races the track should be artificially wet at some point of the races to show the strongest increase in GP in the rain. An idea supported by Pirelli. And you, what do you think?
* According to his manager Daniele Morelli, Robert Kubica is recovering and his rehabilitation is going well but it is impossible for the moment to give a date for his return aboard a f1.

Fernando Alonso's thoughts

Fernando Alonso took part last week in a kart race organized by the main sponsor of Ferrari, the bank Santander. On this occasion he answered to some questions which he discussed of the reliability of the Ferrari for this season and the Pirelli tires he again criticized:
"We only really know where we stand compared to others when we will be in Melbourne. Today, I am happy because we have demonstrated a reliable car. If everything works as planned, we will be among the teams that can fight for the title, alongside defending champions Red Bull , McLaren, Mercedes and Renault also, who had already made great progress at the end of last season. Even Toro Rosso has made significant progress,"
and about the tires:
"From what we've seen so far, degradation is very important. That means we will have races with many stops. I'm not a fan because I think that this heightened uncertainty is not conducive to the top teams: it's like football, it was decided to award a penalty kick by team after each half-hour, Barcelona and Real Madrid not jump for joy. It will be important to be faster because I do not think we can make one less stop than our main opponents."
